In my opinion, the best way to teach students programming is through finding projects they are interested in working on. The best age to start varies, depending on students readiness and comfort doing textual programming. Some students are ready as early as 7, some will be by 9 or 10. The journey from beginner to professional can vary in length depending on each individual student's motivation, interest in programming, and availability of a great mentor who combines three critically important qualities: has extensive professional software engineering experience, is skilled in explaining complex matters to students in a simplest way, and has deep expertise in making students motivated and passionate about engineering and programming.
